To add to Girish's fantastic tips, Indian wrestlers also fast one day in one/two weeks. By fast I mean a low calorie diet of raw fruits/salad, juices and water. In practical terms I found this to be very invigorating with a detox effect on the body…

Come to think of it...you get a macebell cast out in a foundry near your city....I think that is a option worth considering...or if you wanna go homemade type 'gitchy gitchy gada steve maxwell' on google you'll get a good method to make one at home.…

Lot of people have been there...and I don't think it worked out too well.'Cause the plate kinda has a different weight distribution and is likely to hit the body on the way down.Try it with light weights and make a video...good luck..

The Whirling Dervish-The true test of a combat athlete

THE WHIRLING DERVISH-TRUE TEST OF A FIGHTER

The macebell or gada is undeniably effective.Indian wrestlers have mastered the art of swinging for centuries. But there is one limitation it does have.It just doesn't hit your legs. While the kettlebell can boast of a full body workout, the gada is only for the upper body or so you may think.

That's until I came up with an exercise that I like to call the whirling dervish. It involves a mace swing 360 and a 180deg turn t

Training tips from India

TRAINING TIPS FROM INDIA

1. High rep baithaks (hindu squats) are a must for every trainee.Baithaks help ignite the survival chakra which is an energy opening. This chakra strengthens the will and transforms the individual.

Swings of fire-simpleton swinging at its best

Swinging heavy things is fun.Not only that it makes you strong,well-conditioned yet resilient and in full control of the muscular energy you acquire. But sometimes people get carried away with variety.Variety may spice things up but it cannot make you stronger.Bruce Lee once said 'I fear the man who practices one kick 10,000 times rather than the man who practices 10,000 kicks once'.Indian wrestlers like The Great Gama were know to be on the same program throughout their careers. You get the pictu… Continue

Agree. Honestly traditional Indian methods are very obscure and its tough to find an authentic guru. Most of these Akhara kids do use modern gym machines these days. So its kinda confusing whats ailing us as a sporting nation today when we had legendary champions before. Just compare with China....anyway its a subject thats a fulltime study in itself.

I heard about the Russian kettlebell routines...do they have any other secrets in your know? Btw thanks for the mace ideas. I will keep those as a project as I graduate from the basic stuff hopefully in a month or so.

Btw Sushil Kumar the olympic wrestling bronze medalist is an Akhara product; he still trains in Guru Satpals Akhara somewhere near Delhi. I have a plan to visit that Akhara and see them train. Also Great Gama beat the hell out of all world champions(including Russians) at just 5'7" and 250 pounds. Just wondering if the Indian methods are the best in the world...we had lot of wrestling world champions too before but not now!? Your thoughts..IMO the WWE wrestlers are all steroids and showoff with no real functional strenght. Again Great Khali was originally an Akhara product. Don't know how he trains now...steroids??

Dude IMHO if you can swing a gada like how you did in your video you already have herculean upper body strenght! Btw am curious about the Russian methods are they different from the regular western regime? I dont do anything else for strenght, but I would like to incorporate the gada and jori as I get stronger with the hands free stuff.

Akharas are in a low state now because of the gym fad. Most of the boys there are school dropouts, that is why they are not very open. But personally I believe they are on the right path. Power yoga is a asana sequence built around Surya Namaskar plus variations of Veer Bhadra asana, viprit uthit ekpada asasn etc. Its fast paced too. Rodnee Yee is a well known teacher http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLZ2WHodLqQ

I have not swung it even once. I saw it in the great dvd "The Physical Body - Indian Wrestling", where pehelwans built like mountains were swinging 65 kg gadas!!! I am very impressed at your indepth knowledge of these exercises. Where in India are you located?
I have just started doing baithaks, dands, bridging and dumbell swings. Also local akhara boys do it and they are core solid chaps with unbelievable dedication. I have been doing Power Yoga for about 2 years. I work in the IT industry and also have my own musical band in Delhi.
